You're paranoid. You're letting political messages from the news scare you. Wash your lettuce in water. NO ONE in the history of mankind ever died or got sick from washed or even unwashed lettuce. They do have salad spinners though. Buy one at Wal-Mart, K-Mart, or a cookware specialty store in a mall. After washing the lettuce, the spinner spins the lettuce so all the dirt and water come off and end up in the bottom of the bowl. Dont be afraid of you food, just cook it, eat it, and enjoy.

You can't protect yourself from everything eating anything fresh. If you want to be totally safe, you must eat only cooked food, and cook everything very well done; boil anything you cook for at least ten minutes.

There are microscopic things all around us, in your bed, on your towels, and humans immune systems might not in the long run work well if you deprive yourself of all these creepy crawlies. You might develop OCD and be afraid to go in public.
Be wary of going overboard on anything.
