Do the right thing, doesnt seem like many people are doing that anymore

If you are hoping for the country to respect you and look up to you, then do something that benefits the nation. Example, re-educating people to the dangers of cows' milk and unfermented soya bean products (not a hoax), so that manufacturing industries will improve for the sake of the nation's health. Save people's lives, etc. Or do something which alleviates the country's poor. Re-educate them to financial freedom. Something like that.
However, your intention should be sincere. You should help not only for self-benefit. Sometimes, the little things count and you don't need to be a big shot to help.
On the other side of the coin, committing crimes can make you "stand out' in the nation as it may put you on front news page!

By standing out do you mean so you are recognized by others or do you want to make a positive difference in the lives of others regardless if anyone else will notice or give you recognition?
Try volunteering. Gives people a good feeling to help others just for the sake of it.

Well, as we've become the most vulgar and shocking nation ever, I'm not sure. Being an upstanding citizen modeling your life after Christ would turn heads, because so many are anti-Christian these days.

be honest and hard working, do what is right *most dont know or care* have manners and be considerate of others. and if you do it in bright tye dye you might stand out a bit more:)
