It's whatever you can afford. Remember this is the ring that she'll wear for years to come. Some brides upgrade their diamonds as the marriage grows so does the diamond. Some engagement rings are not diamonds, but other gemstones, rubies, emerals, pearls. CZ's are great fakers, but be careful not to go too large, or everyone will know it is a cheap fake.
The diamond companies had ads years ago that stated a ring should cost you 2 1/2 months salary. They were selling their diamonds. 2.5 months salary is a lot for some and for others not that much.

Get the most beautiful ring you can afford to buy. Do your reseach in order not to get ripped off. Make sure the diamond is certified and appraised properly. Spend more on your wedding than the ring. The ring wll be on her finger forver so make sure you pick a good one, but don't go into debt over it. The pawn shop has great [prices on diamond rings.

The traditional answer is "two months salary," but remember, this is a number devised by the industry trying to profit from you. Analyze your budget, figure out what you are comfortable spending. If it's not a surprise engagement, you may wish to speak with your girlfriend to find out if she has any expectations, style choices, etc. It may help shape your decisions. Check out www.bluenile.com --they have rings and diamonds for good prices across all budget levels, and the online education sections are really good. Their phone staff is also really good if you have questions, not pushy at all and very knowledgable.

it depends. is your future wife planning to have a grand wedding? if she's planning to spend 20k for the wedding, it's nice if you buy her a 5k engagement ring. if you can't afford, maybe 3k will do. don't worry you can do installment anyway. start now while there's time to do that. just don't go to expensive diamongd store like tiffany. you can find rings with the same quality with tiffany's at any jewelry exchange store or go to kay jewelers or any outlets.

more attention should be paid on religious counselling than a ring. the relationship should outlast the ring. happiness is more important than a ring, the ring is for others to benefit from. Compatibility and love is far more important if you don't have that there is no marriage.

There is no "should" - whatever you can comfortably afford. Don't get swayed by ads. Most mature women are perfectly happy with whatever their men choose for them - it really, truly is the symbol of it that counts. So you can buy a nice one for a few hundred dollars and up.
