I can agree with most of what you are saying here, point well taken. I have said many times that when you quote scripture to a non believer, then you are wasting your breath. I only quote the Bible when the question involves the Bible, or when asked why I do and believe certain things, because as a Christian, the Bible is the final authority on all matters. Thanks for such a good piece of advice. Peace and blessings to you and yours.

The reason we give a biblical quote is cause we found out where all the answers to life are. In the bible. Christians should break it down also but understand that wisdom may still not be there for the listener. We all begin not understanding but the quest for knowledge is a part of life. Take it as an opportunity to search for a more deeper meaning. The answers can always be given in a test. You will have to study and seek the truth. Pray that God will reveal it to you (He will and when He does you will be amazed at how much sense it makes.) But don't just go by what someone says look it up yourself. Get a bible that speak in the same language you do (no king James version- we don't speak that way). The bible talks about subjects from sex, drugs, abuse, bad friendships, why you were created, who to trust, how to act in relationships all the way to what will happen when you die. It is amazing that with all the questions that we ask not one turns to the one book that has all the answers. People can give you their tainted opinions but the bible has never changed what it says. It doesn't judge it just guides. Start with proverbs (a guide for the youth). Remember ....The truth is sometimes hard to hear.

I am a Christian. I have answered many questions not within the "religion & spirituality" category and offered an answer with a verse or scripture along with the advice to find a good church to get involved in. I have no idea if these people are Christians or non-Christians. This is a forum where we are to offer real advice for things that have helped us through our own personal problems and struggles. Some of those answers have been chosen as "best" by the asker. I guess it didn't push them away. People who are truly looking for answers to real problems read my answers because they know I am being sincere. Likewise, those on here who are merely trying to "make a point" will probably push me away. That's ok. If I help 1 I've made a difference. I am not a preacher, I am not a "Bible-thumper". I am a real person who has faced real problems and survived by the grace of God. I offer scriptures that have helped me get through my darkest times. I've planted a seed and that's a real live human soul that can be saved.

Depends on the question. For example, when people say, "why do Christians believe X", then a Bible quote is appropriate. It answers the question. This is why Christians believe X (it also implies that you did your research -- that you are not just stating your own personal bias against topic X or Y). Besides, God said that his word would not return to him void, but would acomplish some purpose.
I've also seen people expressly ask a question about what the Bible says about subject X, but then say that they want no Bible quotes. How can you answer that kind of question?
On the other hand, I understand that if someone is just giving a random quote that seems out of place, has nothing to do with the question, or if the asker seemed to indicate that he want people's personal opinions, not some quote, then obviously giving a quote from somewhere else seems out of place and downright lazy (although a quote from another author IS giving you someone's opinion -- namely the author's, instead of your own).

I try to never cut and paste an answer, but to say things that I believe in my heart. But my heart and mind are filled with the Word, so that is what comes out.
I can and have sat an talked to many non believers, and never once did I just pull out the bible and start reading chapter after chapter, so why would I do that here.
We as Christians, live by the word, and rely on it's truth. No we don't want to push anyone away, but to us, it is a matter of eternal life and eternal death.

I typically offer a suggestion from both a non-biblical and biblical point of view to show how easily the Bible applies to the real world. There is truth found in the passages if you will only read them. I understand where you are coming from because I had to look into it myself. I didn't accept Christianity till I had studied all religions, read up on the credibility of the Bible, and really experienced it on my own. People so desperately want to save you not out of any benefit to themselves but out of agape love for you.

I'm a christian, but I do agree with what you said. It says so in the bible that a non-believer isn't going to understand the word of God. So when witness to a non-believer, we really shouldn't quote scriptures, but the bible is clear for itself. Jesus spoke the word because he is the word. But, he always had a clear and down to earth conversation with everyone that he came in contact with and we as Christians should do the same and not force or scare a person into believing in Christ.

Fine.How about this.
"Well this book that I just happen to have pulled out of my as$ says that you need to do this...."
Hey,I base my beliefs around the New Testament.I usually warn people this before I speak.I m really sorry, but if you cant handle christian doctrine, then don't ask Christians about it and then go insane when they refer to it.
But,you are right,if people say "Look at all these verses. In them lie your twu answer *mystical poof* " then,ya you look like an idiot.I usually at least come up with why I believe what the Bible says ,unlike some people who say(and I ve actually heard this) "I believe the Bible because thats what it tells me to.".
