Most educated Chinese speak Mandarin as a 2nd language. And the really educated Chinese do English, at least in reading and writing.
Learning Chinese writing might be of personal benefit, but all the various languages that use the writing system are beyond anyone other than a Chinese to learn.
The Chinese learn Japanese and English. Take it from them.

right now I'm taking Japanese its what i wanted to take since i was 12 and I'm 14. Its OK but its also difficult. But i definitely think u should take Japanese even though that Japanese originated from Chinese and is most like the Chinese. It'll be fun trust me.

CHINESE!!
i speak chinese. im not sure which language is easier to learn because its like my native language...sorry.
you should definitely learn chinese because if you can read chinese than you can understand like most of the kanji. like i dont speak any japanese but i can travel around in japan because i can read chinese.
chinese grammar is pretty easy...i dont think theres grammar at all. however it might be kind of hard to pronounce the "alphabet" right at first.
there are more people that speak chinese than japanese. like 1/4 of the world population is chinese.
as for simplified or traditional chinese its hard to say because it depends on what you learn chinese for. like if you are going to study the literature thing you should probablyt learn trad chinese because all the poems and literature stuff were written in trad chinese. but if its for like business matter then learn simplified chinese. you'll be dealing with more businessman from the mainland.
i hope this helps

Japanese. Chinese won't help you much unless you're in China. China makes a lot of stuff, but it's the Japanese who actually buy it and sell it out.
1.4 billion people speak chinese, but they're all in China. Relatively few people speak English, but they're all over the world.

chinese is easier. well...writing....probably japenese. this is japenese writing
こんにちは
It means hello
this is chinese:
你好
i don't really know chinese.
chinese is more marketable because you are more likely to go on a business trip to china than japan.
This is what I wrote on another question about " What do you think about Mandarin(Chinese Language)?"
I LOVE IT! ...or 我愛! that means I love it! This language is unique and has many symbols instead of letters. for instance, this is the alphabet for Chinese:
b c d e f g h i j k l m n o p q r s t u v w x y z
this is what the alphabet would look like in English symbolsChinese is a little more simple. English, you say: pork, beef and other things. in Chinese you just say pig meat or cow meat. also, in English there are different sound for animals. you would say: birds go chirp. in Chinese, it's just bird cry or wolf cry. simple!

Chinese (Putonghua)
I think Chinese is more difficult to learn than Japanese.
As you know some Japanese word which is called ''Kanji'' is come from Chinese words..
I also like Japanese, but learning Chinese can make you slowly understand kanji.
example :
Hello :in Chinese 你好 こにちは konichiwa
teacher : in Chinese 老师 in Japanese 先生(せんせい)sensei
it's all right : in Chinese 没关系. in Japanese大丈夫(だいじょうぶ)daijoubu.
Although they don't have all the meaning , you will find that Chinese characters is also can use in Japanese.
And as you know the China economy is developing at the moment, more and more people come there to make business.
These days in Guangzhou have The Chinese export commodities fair ,it was began at the 15th Oct.
