As a quick aside, the bikes that Lance or anyone else rides in the Tour ARE NOT what you get at your local bike shop, even they claim otherwise. It's just not so. What those guys actually ride are custom frames, made by frame builders, which if you're looking for 'the best' road bike is what you want because a custom bike will fit you perfectly. There are dozens of custom builders who can whip you up an amazing frame, but the waiting list is usually at least 6 months, but 2 years isn't uncommon for some of the really top builders. If you don't want to wait, or drop the cash on a custom bike, it's hard to beat a Colnago. Colnago has 50 years of building amazing bikes, and once you've ridden one you'll see why they command the premium prices they do. A Trek is a mass produced piece of junk that can't hold a candle to a Colnago, Pinarello or Orbea.

That's a very good question, and one that's open to great debate. With Company's like Cannondale, Cervelo, Colanogo, Giant, Lightspeed, and Trek, are among many that make excellent bikes.

With the insurgents of Lance Armstrong and his seven Tour De France wins, Trek has become the most popular bike on the market in most every way. Too answer your question, it's all a personal opinion, and everybodys got one.

Whatever fits your body, budget and riding needs. It's not a popularity contest, and aside from the frame all bikes have the same components on them anyway.

So a Fuji with Ultegra components is the same as a Bianchi with Ultegra, which is the same as a Trek with Ultegra; you get the picture. Different manufacturers will use different materials and have slightly different geometry, but they all still feel like a bike when you ride them.

If I were to give a completely biased opinion, I'd say call Dean in Boulder, CO. They make custom titanium, aluminum and carbon frames for a relatively decent price, and they have the best welds in the industry bar none! If you want the best, make it a custom beauty that no one else has!

Cervelo makes the most technically perfect bike in the SLC-SL (if it fits).

Columbine makes the most ornately beautiful bikes but Vanilla is just as good, if artistically different.

Search for Cinelli, Derosa, Colnago, Seven, Serotta, Litespeed, Richard Sachs, J.P. Weigle, Ridley, Merckx, Pegoretti, Mondonico, Carrera, Moser, Masi, Cannondale, Independent Fabrications, etc. Everything is a compromise in weight, durability, strength, looks, fit, price, availability, snob factor, pride of ownership, etc. Your search for the best will never end.

Good luck!

'Best' is a tricky criterion, but one company stands out as having achieved a number of superlatives with their product line: Cervelo. They have one of the fastest bikes in the pro peloton today with the Soloist Carbon, one of the fastest aluminum bikes ever built with the Soloist Team, the lightest frame in the pro peloton with the R3, and the fastest time trial bike (in the hands of Dave Zabriskie) with the P3.

Best of all, their bikes are reasonably priced when compared against bikes of similar quality. And they provide lifetime warranties. And no, I don't work for Cervelo. ;-)

Best is very subjective.

Like someone said before what fits.

A custom built bike will almost always fit better than a mass produced bike if you have it built right.
