is this fixable? and if it's the cord, how easy is it to change a cord? we've done it for a dryer before, but wasn't sure about for a t.v.

a friend gave us this tv so we don't know how long the wires have been exposed on the cord. when the picture would "go out," i meant that it would get fuzzy or have horizontal lines across it and you would have to stomp on the ground near the tv to get the picture clear again. now it doesn't cut on at all. when we moved the tv to check plugs, that is when we noticed the exposed wires on the cord. can we replace just the cord? we have done that for a dryer when the prongs were not the compatable with the outlet. how much would a tv repairman home visit cost?

Most servicemen will not attempt to repair the set in the home. It is easier to bring the set to the shop than the shop to the set. Sounds like a poor solder connection on the psu/sweep board. I would recommend unplugging it and not trying to use it until it has been repaired. Call around and find out what shops will charge for an estimate ( if you deliver it----key word ). I usually charge $65 for estimate, $125-200 labor and apply the estimate fee to the final bill. This is my walk-in rate. As for the power cord,
I would be required to replace it. Tape works fine if the conductors are not frayed to the point where they may cross over and contact in the same spot.

You will need to contact the place that you purchased the TV. How long have you had it? How long have the wires been exposed? Is the connetion to the TV from the cord visible? All these need be answered and have ready when speaking with the place of purchase. If not, contact a TV repair show and get an estimate on what it will cost. That is more than likely the porblem.

I hope this helps.

Try Best Buy, Circuit City, Frys Electronics and others alike to contact the cheapest repair.

I am an ex TV repair man because my trade has disappeared. You have two separate problems the first being that there is a loose solder connection inside the TV. TV repairmen used to resolder them. You also have exposed wire on the power cable and you should at least tape this up with insulating tape but legally you should replace the whole cable.
What most people do where I come from is go to the supermarket and buy another.
