Hi I have a pet blue and gold Macaw. He is 7 months old and we have had him for about 4 months. He is really good but every now and again he just bites down really hard on your hand for no reason. I really don't know why he is doing it because nothing has changed. When he does it we hold his beak and tell him no and then put him back on his cage. This doesn't seem to be working though. Does anyone have any other suggestions???
Thanks

Find out what he likes and doesn’t like. When he bites or misbehaves, make sure the punishment consists of something he doesn’t like otherwise he might start biting because he actually WANTS you to punish him.

Squirt bottles tend to work well with Macaws, but aren’t necessarily a true punishment; they just work well to get them to stop in their tracks. A sharp stream towards their face and they will usually back off. Some may like it though, thinking that a bath is coming.

Birds also have a very short short-term memory; if you do decide to punish them over a minute after they’ve already done something, you’ll just be confusing them. Try to make sure you act quickly.

Macaws also like making lots of noise. When you yell at them when they do something wrong they translate it as “WOW I’m having so much fun! Let’s do it again!” when in fact you’re telling them “No!”

If he bites when you’re not paying attention, he might want more attention. Don’t give it to him, instead turn your back for a minute and don’t say a word. When he calms down turn back around and reward him. Having a perch setup in a separate room with no toys, no food, no foot traffic and no noise might also be a suitable “time out” area for these occasions.

Birds also go through the same development stages as people. He could be going through those “terrible two’s” and it might just be a phase. He might also be molting and growing new feathers in, which could cause him to act moody. So make sure your actions aren’t something that will make him distrust you when he grows out of it, otherwise he might start biting simply because he doesn’t like you. Also make sure your actions don’t reward his bad behavior or he’ll learn to continue the pattern.

the placement with this chook is a confusing one which will take somebody with journey and records protecting your hand each step of how. it quite is a worry-unfastened concern and maximum qualified parrot behavioral representative provides you help to. I advise which you bypass to the IAABC (Intentional affiliation of Animal Behavioral experts) internet site and discover an approved or associate parrot behavioral representative to artwork with. they don't look to be abundant and you won't discover one on your state. although, they do artwork by utilising telephone and video.
