As a person with tattoos who also used to be a cutter, I would have to say yes and no...I mean, I haven't cut in like years, but I definitely think that some people use tattoos as a form of mutilation because it is more socially acceptable to see someone with a tattoo than to see someone walking around with big cuts and scars all over themselves. I guess it depends on the person that you are asking.

Well then wouldn't getting your ears pierced be the same thing, you're causing your self pain to wear a bit of jewelry. Tattoos have been around for centuries, warriors would have them selves tattooed after they killed some one in battle. I think of it as an art form or a way of expressing your self. Yes there is some pain involved but you have some ones art work on your body, it's worth the pain. Yes some people get addicted to getting tattoos but it's not your problem. I bet when cutters are over cutting they would rather have a tattoo to look at then having scars to remind them, or to make them go back to cutting. Some men and women find tattoos sexy, so to "serve them" some people would get a tattoo. Sailors often got tattooed to bring them luck or to remind them of a journey. Any one has a right to get a tattoo if they want one, tattoos have become a little more acceptable today. It's not as acceptable to go around drinking blood in public.

No not at all.
Personally I have 5 tattoo's each one means something to me. Each individual is different some don't need a reason to get a tattoo or a brand. I prefer tattoo's over branding.
Branding, in my opinion may not be self-mutilation as much as it may be a pain & pleasure experience. Maybe a fetish thing.

Tattoos and cutting are similar, but they aren't. Tattoos are a healthier expression of who you are. Where as cutting is an attention thing and cry for help issue typically found in angst teenagers. Cutting and tattoos are both generally 'addicting' as described by the people who do those things ( I have tattoos and used to cut, I would know). Both are also voluntary pain.

As far as branding, I don't condone that and would rather leave it out since burning flesh isn't healthy or smart at all. Its in a ballpark 10 times more twisted than cutting and tattoos. It is self mutilation.

Tattooing and branding in itself is not self-mutilation, it's art and a way to self express ones own personality. I would question it, however, if a person got branded or tattooed every time they were depressed, upset or angry..etc, then I could see it being a form of self-mutilation.

I don't believe that tattoo's are a form of self-mutilation.........my son was a cutter and there were issues that he needed to deal with. I think that to get a brand is way to painful and much rather prefer a tattoo

Brands defintly are self mutilation. You burning you skin off. They got popular cause some chick fell on a hot sreet cover, & her friends burnt themselves so she wouldn't feel so alone about haveing that.

I have tattoos & I know alot of people with them. To the majority they are an addiction. (much more healthy then cutting onself, but also more perminent)

Out of the people I know with them, most have mutilple ones. (FYI~ non of us are certifibly completly sane) Some do it cause its pretty. Others do it for expression. Some do it cause it turns them on. Others do it cause its like a healing process (kinda like cutting) to them. & more reasons why.

So ya, as a former cutter, I say, That both tatoos & brandings have similarities to cutting.

Tattooes are not like cutting yourself. I have a tattoo. I don't want anymore but it's not the same at all. With cutting yourself, you have a major problem. Tattooing is just a way to express yourself and what you like.
