it may seem old fashion but you should get your man to ask your dad for your hand in marrage because dads always like to know that a guy is polite to there daughter and it will let your parents see that he is responsible and when you annouce it they will be there and happy that you let them help in the choose of it you will have and easyier time like that.

Jam is correct for traditional purposes (great to stick with tradition during the holiday season anyway). Having your intended ask your father for "permission" to marry you is a good way to go, however, should you decide you dont want to go with tradition... you could tell your parents that you have a xmas present for them and then just tell them the news (this is presuming that they like your boyfriend/fiance) or you could tell your fiance that you would like him to ask you in front of them (he could give you the engagement ring, if you have one, as a holiday "gift"). If they dont like your fiance I would avoid telling them during the holidays....

I agree with Jam too. If you chose to not follow Jam's advice, wait until your actually engaged before you tell them; just in case the engagement does not go off as planned. It may spare you some embarrassment.
