I can't find a actual definition, but this is what I remember from my studies last year, as a Youth worker.

VERBAL ABUSE; can take place in many ways, as in put downs, name calling, minimising or devaluing the thoughts and feelings of another person, screaming, taunts, verbal threats and nagging.

Verbal abuse is anything said for the purpose of making you feel bad about yourself in any way. It differs from constructive criticism in that it is intended to hurt rather than improve who you are.

If someone is abusing you verbally!

If someone is saying things that aren't right for you, and insulting for you, or harsh for you, or harmful for you, you can call it verbal abuse, and take action against it.

I would define it as "Comments made to someone solely/mainly for the purpose of causing negative impact of some sorts without any real/positive/constructive reason behind."

It is the feeling of being hit but with words. Words are more painful in the long run.

Calling names, putting someone down in a condescending or manner that they feel badly, frequent arguing and threats.

Belittling you, degrading you, screaming at you, controlling you with words, threatening you, extreme sarcasm, ridicule---emotional abuse with words.
