My boyfriend has hinted around that he'd like to take me to this restaurant some time that people wear a suit and tie and a fancy dress to. Since he is hinting around about this should I consider buying the dress or wait and see if he buys one for the occassion? I don't usually wear dresses and have never had an occassion such as this happen meaning I usually don't even dress up or have any dresses. Any tips?

go shop for a "little black dress". If he doesn't take you to a nice dinner then you are guaranteed to wear the dress some other time. It's also hard to find a dress when you are looking for one, so if you buy one now then you won't be rushed later.

Aks him to go with you to shop for the dress, because you need his idea, too, if you usually don't dress up. Ask him to help you to pick one that both of you like. At that point, if he wants to buy you one he will, otherwise you pay yourself and no more wonder!
Good luck !!!

Normally the person wearing the dress buys it.
He'll be spending enough on the dinner.
