yeah,he's just not used to everything yet thats all.once he gets used to everything he'll go.also if you take him on the same route every day he'll get used to it faster, and then start taking him newer places.

I have a 3 year Lab too- Well I would have wait until he had his shots to get him out where other dogs go potty. Dogs tend to mark their places- that means a lot of bacterias and possible disease. As soon as your dog get all his shots, begin walking him about 5 to 10 minutes after he has eaten. If what you want is that he does not goes potty on your yard. You will have to be extremely consequent. Food potty- drink potty. He will get accustomed to it. Perseverance. Labs are the most sweet dogs, congrats for choosing a black lab.

I had to deal with this when I was showing my dogs, they were only used to going @ home, & didn't want to go on the show grounds... I thought their poor bladders would explode!
The way I dealt with it was to spend a week of potty training @ home... If you don't have a phrase yet, start to incorporate one. (I use 'go now'). Then, take your dog out in the backyard on a long leash... let him go whereever he wants, but tell him 'go now' & as soon as he does, praise & a treat (don't let him see the treats until you give him one, or he wont pay attention to his business!)
Once he is consistently going (& we are really working for urination here, pooping is something they will do elsewhere once they are comfortable peeing elsewhere) then start giving him the phrase but not wandering your yard with him, he now needs to go within a leash-radius of you. Keep repeating the phrase until he goes, then praise & a treat.
Finally, you are ready for the real world... try the front yard, a neighbors yard (with permission), a local park...
Keep in mind, with all your training, it will work best if he REALLY has to go... so do this in the morning, when you get home from work... wait until he tells you hes gotta go before taking him out & trying to train him.
Good luck, & don't be discouraged if it takes a bit & then when you think you made a breakthrough, he still wont go on a trip... it takes a while for them to get comfortable with their surroundings. It is helpful that you are doing this when he is still young, my girls were 1 1/2 - 2 years old when I realized the problem I was going to have on the show circuit! =-)

well if you let him in the backyard about 30mins after he eats that could be why. Most dogs will go to the bathroom shortly after eating. If he goes to your friends yard and doesn't go to the bathroom ask yourself...have i fed him within the last hour?
some dogs won't go outside of their yard just because it isn't their territory. If the yard is run by another dog then it could be a dominance thing. Wild dogs will mark with urine and stool to map out their property. If the property isn't theirs and the owner of the yard is more dominant than your pup then you won't have poop from your dog. It should ease up once they become friends.

i think you should be thankful you just have do your picking at your backyard. my white terrier and shih tzu do their thing at a certain spot in my garage and leave them there till the droppings get cleaned up, which is immediately of course. Thus, i get to enjoy my walks with them minus the embarassment and mess of picking their poos in public.

take him to a park, or somewhere where you HAVE to stay there for a few hours............. make sure your dog hasn't gone pee or poo, before you left... when the dog HAS to pee / poo...it will...no matter if it's in / at a park, friends house, or walking down the sidewalk. If it's "forced" to go, 'away' from home, it will eventually. It'll 'learn' that it's OK to go, away from home. Worked for my dog, hope it will for yours !

Maybe you should give him more time to check out his surroundings-tie him but giving him enough room to sniff out where he is at,eventually he will mark his territory!
