I'm so sorry :-( I live up in Yonkers NY, myself, and I always buried my dogs in my own yard. It just seems to be the most natural thing to do, as long as you don't have to worry about nosy neighbors watching. It's a lot of work burying a dog, though. You need a spade and a pickaxe to get it at least 3 feet below the surface, so that you don't have to worry about any skunks or rats digging up the body. My dogs were big German shepherds, so maybe if you have a small dog, you can get away with digging a smaller hole. But you can call up any veterinarian and ask what it would cost to have a dog cremated, last I checked it's about $200 in my area. Be sure to enjoy whatever time you have left with your doggie :-)

Pet cemetaries offer an option and your vet will offer to cremate as well and you have the option to take the ashes.

My MIL had her old dog put to sleep after many beautiful years with her best friend. She wanted to bury her in the back yard, but to be safe about the the potential issues of contaminating local water sources, I know she added something that speeds up the decomposition of the body, I think it was lime, but not sure. You'd have to check your local ordinances tho to see and if you live in the country and choose to bury, be sure to do it safely away from any well water source.

Sorry to hear that your dog might be gone soon.

Sept 8, 2006 i had to put my kitana to sleep...we ended up burying her in a spot i was working on for a flower bed....i have since planted a few iris and daylilies over her and they are growing nicely

she loved to lay in my flowers and smash them so i figured this was a fitting end for her

i miss her terribly and still get choked up over losing her occasionally...i had her over 11 yrs...got her when she was 4 mos old and except for when i was not home she was always at my side....she loved to ride and would always bark upon getting into the front of the truck but her last ride she just laid there with her head in my lap staring at me....i lost a piece of my heart when she was put to sleep but i know she is now healthy and pain free once again able to use all of her legs, cancer free and happy waiting on the day we are reunited

we also have 3 other dogs and 3 cats so that has helped somewhat to ease the heart ache of losing kitana...although i miss her terribly and am shedding a few tears writing this i know she is better off....she will always hold a special place in my heart.....even with all the dogs i have had and the 3 i currently have kitana was by far my favorite dog...i could not have asked for a better dog and i think she knew how special she was to me which is why she was always by my side
she was a solid white ger shep mix and was the most faithful dog i have ever seen

i love her dearly but life must go on so i grieve when i need to then turn my attention to the other 3 here to help ease the pain and they know when i am sad cause they will come up and just lay their heads in my lap for a few minutes and remain quiet

somewhere in my profile is a pic of her....if i could have gotten her a new body i would have..her heart, soul and mind were still good...her 11 yo body was just wore out and cancerous...i still wont remove the mattress off our pedastal bed and vacuum her hair out because i dont want to completely clean her out of the house just yet

good thing you cant see the hair under there...lol...it is just my way of coping i guess

It depends on where you live. In a town I lived in outside of LA, you couldn't bury your animals in your backyard under city ordinance, So the only option was cremation. It cost about $80 and your receive your dog's ashes in a very nice locked box that you can bury if you choose. I'm sorry about your dog. I know it's a tough thing to face.

I am so sorry. I had to put one my dogs to sleep 18 months ago(17 yrs old) and our other one 3 months ago (16 yrs old). I still cry.
We chose to cremate our pets in a private cremation. We have their ashes on our fireplace mantel with their pictures beside them. Our township does not allow the private burials of animals. The pet can either be cremated individually or with a general cremation.

When I had to put my dog down I had him cremated & ask my
Vet to get the ashes. I do not know how you feel about having a
urn in your house, but it makes me feel better, closer to him
since I loved him so very much. It does not cost that much, but as I mentioned I am not sure how that makes you feel. It surely made me feel alot better. I know it is very hard to part with your best friend, & I am very sorry for that. I hope I was able to suggest something you might want to consider, think about it.

I am so sorry about your dog. We own our land, so our dogs are buried here. We have buried several of them over the years. If you live in an apartment or rent elsewhere, you might want to have the dog cremated. Or they have pet cemeteries where you can bury them. Again, I am so sorry about your dog.

In the past, growing up, all my pets were buried in my back yard. Now, because I know I won't live forever in my home, I will have my dogs cremated and either placed in a nice urn or box for me to keep forever.

If it is a family pet, I have always buried mine. I put flowers out according to the season and I ordered a pet grave marker off of the Internet.
