While alcohol use doesn't directly increase cholesterol levels, it can certainlly adversely effect the liver with heavy use. The liver plays a major role in cholesterol, so any damage to it can create problems in that area. That aside the two big factors in cholesterol are genetics and lifestyle (diet and excercise).

It's not supposed to. Red wine contains Polyphenols (similar to those found in Green Tea) which many doctors and nutritionists say may help lower cholesterol.

Alcohol in general doesn't have Saturated Fat which is supposed to be a big contributor to higher cholesterol.

In some studies, moderate use of alcohol is linked with higher HDL or good cholosterol levels. However, the benefit is not great enough to recommend drinking alcohol is don't already do so.

If you drink, do so in moderation. Incidence of heart disease in those who consume moderate amounts of alcohol is lower than in nondrinkers. However, with increased consumption of alcohol, there are increased public health dangers, such as alcoholism, high blook pressure, obesity, stroke, suicide, etc.

So your answer is no, relatively speaking, alcohol does not raise cholesterol.

It depends on the alcohol. As a matter of fact after dieting and losing 30 lbs, my good cholestrol which was already too low, went down and my bad that was already too high went up!! Believe it or not, My doctor told me to drink a glass of red wine every day, to bring bad back down and the good up. I haven't followed that advice but have seen much documentation on it in recent months. Smoking is also bad for the cholestrol - I need to stop that habit too. Good Luck !!

I believe it raises cholesterol. Specifically the HDL cholesterol, which is the "good" cholesterol. So technically it does raise your cholesterol.
