When you purchase a software program and are not provided w/ hard copy manuals can you legally print the pdfs?

I was questioned by a copy shop. I would think I would have permission, is there a blanket rule or would this vary from package to package?

Of course. The software companies would actually like you to print their manuals so that they dont have to produce them and package them. The PDF can be printed and bound for easy reference.
