if you have no risk factors LDL can be as high as 160 if you have cardiovascular risk factors like diabetes LDL should be <100. Total may seem high but if your HDL(the good cholesterol) is higher it will make your total look bad, you must provide the breakdown(LDL, HDL, Trig) for us to tell you if it is "really" bad or not :)

not good but not all that bad. More importantly what is the ratio of good to bad cholesterol? If you have a high percentage of HDL 220 isn't a big deal, if hovever the LDL has the upper hand you should be very proactive in correcting the problem.

Not necessarily- you should look to see the other numbers. The LDL should be below 100 (preferably lower than 70) They HDL should be higher than 45... it is good if it is even higher than average. If the LDL is normal and the HDL is high and this is what is making the total number high- it should be ok. If not, 220 is a little high but can most likely be easily controlled and lowered with medications.

I would say it is getting up there...Mine was 250 and the doc put me on Lipitor. Now it is down to around 170 or 180.

It's a bit on the high side, but not high enough for medication. Just watch your diet.
