hello! I'm Japanese and here is my "personal" opinion...I hope this helps you.

I went to 4 year-college in US so i think i know whats goin on "American and Japanese dating thing".
I'm not that shy girl but everytime when bunch of American guys came up to me and asked tons of questions about me at cafeteria, I was just freak out.. I do understand english but their "fast-idiomatic-slang" speaking english made me dumb. AND many American misunderstand that its good start to talk about something "very Japanese" like geisha or sushi or whatever... every guys who came up to me are like " hey, do you like my japanese letter tattoo?" "I have Judo black belt" or " I love japanese manga" blah blah blah... Actually, many japanese who came to US don't have interest in those "Very Japanese" things. We came to US because we love YOUR culture, you know? We wanna see/experience/know YOUR culture.
So this is mine.. Talk to her one-on-one first;not groupie! I think its good start to talk on the phone or whatever she feels fine, and when she open herself to you, ask to go out. (If you have a car and can take her somewhere she wants is really great!) and then finally its time to show your "new japanese girlfriend" off at cafeteria!!yea! it might take more time then 'just say hi! and ask goin out' but u know shes Japanese.... Its worked on almost all of my japanese friends in here, so try! Good Luck!

PS:if she asked u to take her to Venice Beach or Hollywood or wherever "very American" sightseeing spots, sorry! we are Japanese.lol

Most Japanese girls are shy. I am too. I am Japanese, and I have had hard time to communicate with people when I came to the U.S. and started going to school. If she hasn't mastered her English yet, she may be scared of making a mistake during a conversation. I felt a lot better when I talked to people from also another country because they make mistakes on pronunciation/word selection too. She may get nervous when she talks to Americans.
What you should do might be to talk and to listen calmly, and you can appeal that you are interested in Japan. Ask some questions related to Japanese cultures. Or you can ask her to study together or something.
As soon as she feels comfortable talking to you, she will start talking more, and you guys will get along each other.
Good Luck!

Make sure she knows english, if not u try to speak broken english.
Sit close to her and be in her looks ann the time whenever she is with u. I hope u will succeed, if not any one by now as her bf. Gud luck.

most japanese girls are shy (shyer than most) ... and since she's only here a year i doubt she'd want a boyfriend ... but you can still try to talk to her.

also please note that most japanese girls are forbidden to date americans ... their families frown upon this ... so this may hinder your dating too ... good luck
