America is often referred to as the "last remaining superpower". This is in reference to its nuclear power (cf. Nagasaki and Hiroshima in any 20th Century History text) and political sway over most of the known world. However, as we are approaching the end of the age of oil, the balance of power is beginning to shift. It is speculation now that China or India may become the next world superpower due to their populations, investments in technology, and relatively low wages that allow for corporations to hire large numbers of workers to produce large quantities of products by spending a minimal amount of money.

This has got to be a joke. There is no question about it. And it didn't happen yesterday. Its been that way since WWII.

At the end of WWII the U.S. had a Navy larger than the combined Navies of the rest of the world and an Air force larger than the combined air forces of the rest of the world. The Soviets had the largest Army and the most tanks. But there were never a match.

The biggest difference now is that with the fall of the Soviet Union the technological advantage of the U.S. is easy to see. Before the fall it wasn't clear we actually had an advantage.

Dunno, in terms of influence it seems to have a hell of alot on the UK and some other NATO allies. Its also got a hell of an army to boss people about with. Though over the last 5 years they seem to have lost influence, it seems more countries are giving america the finger - Iran, North Korea, France... I think that china are becoming more important economically and as a result american forign policy has changed towards their old enemy- it seems america is pandering to china, not the other way round.
