Akitas were bred in Japan for fighting so they can have a strong will and have a tendency to like to 'lead the pack'. This is sometimes misinterpreted as "aggressive" behavior but usually it's actually dominance behavior. I would not recommend having an akita around small children until you know more about the breed.
With some very basic study (a couple of weeks reading books from your local library or a bookstore) on your part about dog training and handling, you can find that an akita can be a wonderful member of the family. Without that training, however, you could find your hands full with a dog who believes that he runs the house. And if you don't know how a dog thinks, an akita will run the house.
Having been a dog breeder/trainer/handler/shower for 20 years I personally think that people should have to have at least as much training on how to care for a dog as they do learning how to drive. Dogs are easier to understand and work with than a car, but darn near nobody takes the time to learn how to do it. But that's my opinion.

The Akita has a reputation as an aggressive and highly territorial dog. Many I have met fit the stereotype; However the biggest scariest Akita I met was really a nice guy? so you never know. If your able to meet parents or siblings that may que you as to the bloodlines temperment.I have had Pitbulls for the past 25 years and my dogs have all been very friendly,so you can't put too much weight in generalizations.Holli Terrier my current Pit will be on "The Dog Whisperer" Oct.30 at 9:00 pm if you're interested.

working with animals over the last 10 years or so, I have only seen two nice akitas. I am sure most will not like this answer, but it is true.

Tough. Dominant. Independent minded. Never going to collect many AKC performance degrees in anything.
Let's just say that seeing one of these walk into the first day of my obedience classes made me mutter bad words under my breath and take a couple extra anti-inflammitories to get ready for the wrestling matches and arguments over sit and come.
Ownership of this breed will get your homeowners policy cancelled by several major insurance companies so check it out first.

I read a true story about how loyal an akita dog is... according to the story, it is VERY loyal and trustworthy, so i'm guessing it's temperament is really good.

They are very protective of the family they are raised around, will hurt any one they feel is a threat to their family, GOOD dogs all n all, but try to work with them at a young age to break them of this very bad habit.... let others know of this behavior before they play around with your family in front of them, if that makes any sense.

Pretty much the same as any other dog, as long as you raise and train it properly.
