First it aint like TV.

CSI in almost all cities don't exist for one thing, In most cities officers do the investigation and send all the evidence to the state crime lab.

And in the large cities that do have crime labs, the lab techs don't go out into the field, they have specfic field evidence people who do the collection of evidence, all under the supervision of the supervision of the lead investagator.

So TV is great TV but not real life.

And in general they don't work "together" one does one job collect evidence or review evidence the police send in.
Except for a few people who just do the field work, ( they collect the evidence and take it back to the lab people who don't leave the lab. And none of the lab people quesiton any of the suspects.

And normally the lab people will blame police for messing up some evidence or the police will blame the lab people for not finding the right evidence or proving thier case, or taking too long.

Also like in South Georgia, it can take up to 6 months just to get the results from a drug test, not the 5 hours like it shows on TV.

LOL....99% of the"CSI" units are part of the agencies. Some states seperate them but for the most part you CSI units are in your major cities. IE if it doesn't qualify as a metropolis or large city they are less likely to be able to fund one.

Example: I work for a Sheriff's Office in a rural county. For all intensive purposes, my fellow investigators and i are the CSI and the investigator. Where as FAirfax County in VA has its own CSI.. Difference is population. Here about 45-50,000. There a little over 2-3 million.

It all boils down to the money and funding. We also have the State Lab and State Police we can call on for Advanced CSI services.

Crime scene invetigators are police officers, or civilian personnel of the police department. They are co-workers.
