I think good communication between two people is a very important ingredient for keeping passion alive. It can't garantee it however, as both have also to want similar levels of exitement in life and you need to avoid one party reaching a dominant role in the relatiomship, in which they can grow too comfortable, controlling and lazy.

I would split the communication into two parts, 'listening' and 'responding', with both parties trying to do the following.

Listening: Try to listen not just to the information, but also to the feelings that are being expressed and address these when thinking of a response.

Responding: Show empathy for the persons feelings but be also genuine to your mood and your desires when answering/speaking.

I think also both people have to want the same kind of future.

I used to be with a wonderful girl and we communicated well. However we saw different futures, with me seeking a younger more fun outlook at that time whilst she felt a need to conform to behaviours that she felt others such as family wanted from her. The mistake we made was to view our differences over too short a future. In the long teerm they wouldn't have been as significant.

Adding mystery, teasing, being unpredictable, or at least doing all the things that kept you both on your toes at the beginning, can help keep the relationship alive as well as new things.

Also you have to continue to value each others qualities.

If it always takes too much effort then re assesment of what future is possible may be required.

They say a relationship often starts with lust and if your lucky develops into a deep friendship. If your unlucky it ends up as a prison. Both need to compromise equally over time if this transition is to happen without feeling trapped.

You must always understand and tolerate your partner in doing any kinds of things and matters. Having said the 2 facts, at least you can have a minimum passion alive in a relationship. Don't you think so ?

Usually what helps me is reading all the cool magazines, watching all the cool soaps/movies, listening to the cool music, and usually the 40 year old lady at the corner of the street who is homeless gives me such good advice, like what type of guys to go for N STUFF

In short, don't take each other for granted. It sums up everything needed in a relationship. Being there for each other, always helping, loving, trusting, caring & concern for each other.
