Don't waste your money. Get a job waiting tables at a restaurant that has a bar, and, once you're in good, see if they'll let you come in (on your off days) and follow the bartender. That's the only way you'll learn. Oh, and buy a Mr. Boston's Bartender's Guide at a book store. That's the only money you'll need to spend.

I started by being a waitress. When the bartender was away or busy, I'd have to fetch beer and make drinks. Then I ended up turning into a bartender who occasionally waitressed when needed. Small independent family restaurants give you a break like that. Although a friend of mine applied at Applebees to be a bartender with no experience. She had to memorize over 1000 recipes, then have an on the spot test. They'd randomly throw her drink orders and she'd have to make them. She passed and got hired!

It's worth the school just to learn the drinks. It doesn't teach you anything about working the bar though and that is a skill you either have or don't. Don't go to a school taught by some 70 y/o woman that used to work at the VFW. Find an instructor that is either still in the scene or fresh out of it. And do whatever you can to work on your looks. Most bars hire attractive people over unattractive people. Don't spend more than $400 on a school. Any more than that is a rip off. And start networking. Getting the good gigs is all about who you know. Good luck. I've managed Nightclubs for twenty years in Tampa. Trust my advice.

While I can't speak for the NYC area, a class is good. A friend of mine in Boston took her classes, and ended up with good temping gigs at functions.

I don't know about NYC, but you can look on www.lmi.state.ny.us for more information. It will tell you the average hourly wage, the growth potential, and more. Good luck!! Or just check out www.lmi.gov
