When you want a new one. If it bugs you to just throw the old one away...afraid about energies or whatever, then burn it, with respect.

Just season the new, I do think it helps to get it attuned to your energy, and get your mind involved in the new one.

The cards are nice, but what is most important is the symbolism of the cards, and how your mind wraps itself around them...

Hail Eris! All Hail Discordia!

I am a professional psychic and always have at least 4 different decks on the go at any one time. When a deck get’s a bit too well worn I buy a new deck. I prefer to work with as new a deck of cards as possible so they shuffle and deal smoothly and quickly.
I usually sell my old decks on eBay and because they have been well used by me they fetch 2 to 3 times the price of a new deck. So discard them by all means but don’t throw them away, put them on eBay and see what you get.

Another option is this: Here is a free download demo for a great Tarot program. To keep the size of the demo manageable it contains the Rider/Waite deck, the actual program will have 10 complete decks. This Demo version of Tarot is a full working copy for 30 days. http://www.free-tarot-download-demo.wotsnext.com

Since you have already decided to toss them it shows you understand that they are just for fun and have no real ability to predict your future or control your fate. That being said just for fun's sake you can do another reading for yourself, someone else, a pet - I don't know if i would toss them in the trash - i have a "Love" Tarot deck that i have not used since the day i bought it but i keep it because the box it came in is pretty and looks good on the shelf. If you want to make a few bucks back post your deck on ebay, shipping and handling alone will bring you the good fortune or wealth.

I have four decks. It's just a deck of cards. If you no longer feel a connection with the cards and wish to throw them away, then do so. They're just objects. I would have thought your teacher would have taught you that the objects are only things to heighten your own focus, not important in and of themselves.

it's the same reason things like the pentacle are important. They symbolize what you care about and serve to heighten your own focus. But they're just objects.

Why not give them to someone. So many collect many decks. I once knew someone who had over 50 decks even before he learned how to read with them!

Throw away the old deck and don't bother to get a new deck. You can live your life much better without a dependency on the superstitious power of man-made cards.

Of course it's okay--not what most people do, because of the amount of personal energy infused into them, but it's perfectly okay--most people ritually dispose of their old decks--I burn mine in ritual when I get a new deck

although i am not superstitious ... i wouldn't throw them away
they mean too much to me
but i have given them away to people who i think would benefit from them and they have always been much appreciated
let your intuition find a new home for them xx

If your cards have served you well, place them in a brown paper bag, and bury them. next to a tree, that way they know they have finished they job, and can now rest.
