This is from the web site in my "source:"

Cougars, which are in the same family as house cats, do purr. Lions, tigers and other big cats do not purr. The general rule of thumb is that if they can roar they cannot purr, and if they can purr they cannot roar.

Tigers, snow leopards and clouded leopards make a sound called "chuffing" by rumbling their throat and blowing air through their nostrils. It's similar to the sound we make when we clear our throat. Chuffing, in cat language, is used for greetings and apologies.

Do Tigers Purr

Milomax is absolutely correct. I worked at a big cat reserve and cougars do purr. The other big cats do chuff, but not purr. All the volunteers learned to chuff when approaching the tigers as a way of introducing themselves in non-threatening way. All bets were off at feeding time however.

Actually, lynx, cheetahs and cougars purr like house cats. They don't roar. Only lions, tigers and leopards roar. Some say jaguars and the variation called the black panther can sometimes purr. The big cats that roar chuff instead of purring.

I worked at a big cat rescue for over 7 years. I raised lions, tigers, cougars and leopards. Lions, tigers and leopards belong to the family Panthera and DO NOT PURR at any time in their life. Only cougars, which are in the family Felis, same as our housecats, actually purr. Lions moan, growl, snarl, roar and as babies they make a noise that sounds just like a goat and they also squeak a little. Leopards are pretty quiet and just growl, moan and snarl. Tigers are very vocal. They moan, growl, snarl, snort and make a very distinctive noise by blowing air out in short bursts known as Chuffifng or Poofing. Cougars whistle like a bird, snarl, growl, hiss, make a very low meow, purr and screech. I just put up two videos on youtube of our lions, one of them roaring and another growling and snarling. I also have videos of the cougars purring and whistling and the tigers chuffing.

RE:
Do tigers (or other big cats) purr?

Well....yes and no. They have a similar larynx (voicebox) to regular domestic cats, and it works in exactly the same way, but it's so much BIGGER than a house-cat's that the sound comes out a lot louder and a lot deeper. So although the sound is produced in exactly the same way as a cat's, it doesn't sound like a purr - more like a soft, gentle growl.

Hope that helps!

No. They roar, but they do not purr. The vocal cords that allow this either allow purring (as in house cats) or roaring (as in big cats, such as lions and tigers).
