Black most likely could be mold, and mold should not be ignored. Then again don't believe all the "Sky is Falling" types. Remember while some mold grows in homes and kills people, while others heal people everyday (Pencillian). Always use cleaners proven to prevent disease and bacterial spread (10:1 bleach), but remember that many disinfectants are now being blamed for superresilient strains like MRSA and overprotected children have higher incidents of Asthma and Allergies. So what is the best answer for your children? Guess we all have to wait for all the world experts to figure this one out, they have only been working on it for 40 years, they should have the problem solved soon.

Yes it's mildew. I usually throw them away too, but if it's a real favorite I put a mixture of bleach and water in the sink with the drain plugged and get the toy full of bleachy water and squirt it back out. Repeat several times, and this should temporarily get rid of the black, though it will come back with time of course.

I think it is mold. I threw all of those toys away. At babies r us they have bath flutes. They are clear so you can see right inside of them. My kids love them. Those are the only water toys (that fill with water) that I will get my kids.

Could be. Bathrooms are breeding grounds for mold. It can be inside plastic, but also behind your sink tops, even in the place where the sink fits into the counter. You are a good and wise mother to be alert to this danger. Mold can damage the health in a serious way.

Mold inside - not worth keeping - use mesh bags for hanging the new ones and make sure they are squeezed out after bathing.

yes it is. Wash his toys in a bleach solution and wash them THROUGHLY before returning them to the tub. It's probably not the infamous black mold. It's more than likely mildew, no need to worry unless he has mold allergies.

Yep. It's definitely mold. The same mold that forms on bathtub showers. Very dangerous and bad for respiratory health.
