Some front load washers are reported to retain water in the rubber seal around the doors, which causes smelly water. Anyone familiar with this?

I have the Maytag Neptune front load washer and dryer - I have had them 6 months or so and so far I have not experienced that problem. From what I understand, The Neptune series originally did have the problem you mentioned, but my version has a hole where the water can drain. It has plugged up before - with hair (of all things!) usually after a load of towels. I am very happy with my choice.

I have the Whirlpool Duet (front loader), and I love it. Not for nothing, but I am not a fan of GE. Have has too many GE's go belly up on me. Some complaints I have heard about front loaders is that mildew builds up on the seal and the wash cycles are very long (over an hour), but I have never had mildew in mine (almost five years now) and the wash cycles vary anywhere from 30 mins to 60 mins. The regular wash cycle is 40 mins, which is fine with me. I run a bleach load usually 2-3 times a month and I keep the door ajar when not in use, so I think that keeps the mildew at bay. ETA: No leakage and no bad smell either, in almost 5 years. I can't vouch for all front loaders, only the Whirlpool duet. Just be sure to follow the manufacturers instructions. ETA: It also has an option to "add a garment" during the wash cycle within the first few minutes, in case you forget something.

They used to do this. I've had my Maytag Neptune for 7 years and it did this, but the company fixed it for free. You can also leave the door open (remove bulb so it doesn't burn out) to dry out inside. Otherwise this unit is great! Uses much less water. Can be a little noisey, so don't locate near a bedroom and then run washer before you go to sleep!
