It could be fluid or an infection. Maybe it should be drained.
Ask the vet how long this situation will last? It could just be due to the surgery, but as you see it, better be aware than not.
I would keep an eagle eye on it for another couple of days then get an answer from your vet for sure.
Also, ask on line your question: Is it common for dogs after leg surgery to get a painful lump? Hope this helps and you seem like great owners.

is it red or irratated looking, or hot to the touch? If so, could be an infection. Or, could be normal and still sensitive since it has only been 1 week. I had a broken bone repaired years ago and it is STILL painful to the touch! Best to take the dog in for a quick look. Maybe even a vet tech could take a look at it to decide if you need to see the vet again.

Sounds like onset of infection, but could be a blood clot also.... try a warm (not 'hot') compress on the lump for about 10 minutes (if the dog will let you ) 3 - 4 times a day.... if the dog continues to react like he wants to bite, contact another vet, and ask them what it could be..and what to do. If the lump is "warm", that's a good sign of infection.

Not every germ responds to antibiotics, it could be a self contained infection - a sterile abscess. Or it could be a hematoma - which is a pocket of blood under the skin. Either of them could meet the description you give.
If the vet doesn't want to see the dog - I would find another vet to care for my dog. Even if the guy is 100% sure it's "nothing/normal" to reassure you, they should be willing to see the dog to be sure and reassure you. If you're willing to pay him for an office visit - why shouldn't he?
Good luck, and I hope your dog is quickly on the mend.

this sounds very much like an abcess - a closed infection that cannot drain, no opening to the skin-surface.
Go to another vet! any vet willing to tell U over the phone that a painful, hot-swelling is a 'pin' isn't worth their fees.
find another vet who will SEE U and Ur dog, and get another opinion... ASAP!
an abscess can easily become body-wide; do Not! wait.
this is urgent - not 'optional'. Good luck!

What kind of stitches/sutures were used to close him back up? When my dog was spayed she had some kind of sutures on the inside that were supposed to dissolve and she ended up having an allergic reaction to them and had a lump similar to what you are describing. It could be something like that. Even though the vet said it was "normal" I would go with your instincts on this one because you know your dog (or your daughter knows her dog) best. Good luck, I hope he's feeling better soon!

Might be abcessing a little - a touch of infection. That is the heat and pain.
Take his temp. If it is up, it might be a fever from infection. It happens.
Take him back in if it keeps up another 24-48 hours.
Could happen - it depends on the anitbiotics. Not all antibiotics kill all bacteria. Different drugs or different types.

I'm not a vet, but it sounds like a start of an infection to me. Call your vet, make an appt to go in and actually show him. But since he seemed to blow you off, I would consider taking him to another vet and I'm sure someone else would take him quickly considering the situation.

Its probobly an infection. My dog had the same thing after he had his hernia repaired. The vet used a pair of scissors to cut it and squeezed the pus out. He immediately felt better. Actually, its nothing you cant do yourself. It will be full of pus and a little blood and will continue to drain a little for the next few hours.

It sounds like a hernia, get the dog looked at by another vet and see what they say. Hernia's are very painful and are squishy. get the dog to a vet ASAP, it won't get better on it's own.
