You should know all about your breed before you decide to own one. Please do your research before bringing this poor dog home.

I have owned a St. Bernard (female) for 13 years. You might want to think about this REALLY CAREFULLY.

1) A St. B is huge. They can hit 150 lbs with no problem. They can eat a 50lb bag of food within a month or less.
2) They need a lot of space to run and play. And they need to run and play.
3) They can be extremely possessive. If they regard you as the alpha, they will not bear to let you leave their sight. Do you have kids? This can be a good thing as they will not tolerate any stranger getting within spitting distance of them.
Have you seen Beethoven? They can and do, drool with authority. Be prepared to have slobber streamers all over you. Bathing one is a special treat reserved only for little kids who have no problem with getting wet and soapy and don't mind chasing a dripping wet and lathered dog up and down the street.

All kidding aside, they are loyal, listen generally well, and unless the small kids do evil on them, they'll be tolerant and protect them.

I have Leonbergers (rare breed, UKC), which are Saint, Newfoundland, and Great Pyr mix, so I can help you a LOT. You may want to write this down. First of all, they shed alot, their favorite color is mud, and they DROOL!! (Leos, for some reason don't) However, they are sooooo worth it. little Saints are very loyal, never aggressive, kid-friendly, and eager to please. Leonbergers are even more so, so I would suggest Leos instead if you have the money. Large breed dogs need lots of food and real meat, not just kibble. Brush them at least twice a week, and make sure to socialize them young. Take them to petsmarts ans such. Parks are a great place to do this. Make sure it knows who's boss. Know your breeder's dogs, and their heritage. look for Polyneuropathy (PN) and cataracts in particular. They're common faults in big dogs. Know whether you're going to show it, breed it , or keep it just as a pet. For show, look for body structure and heritage. For breeding, look for show standards and especially temperament. For a pet, look for temperament in particular. You don't want to pick out an agressive dog. This should be enough for now.

They require a lot of room to run, a lot of exercise, a lot of food and a lot of time for them to be really happy. If you have the room for one and are going to make sure he gets proper exercise and a proper diet.. then go for it. Dont get the cheap dog food either. Get a good large breed puppy food if he is still under a year old.
If they aren't happy, they will get destructive! they are very sweet though

Let me get this straight. You're about to get a Saint Bernard without knowing anything about the breed?

Oi.
