stayed out of foreign policy, and let the chips fall where they fall?

The reason...or excuse was because of 911.
A nation don't let chips fall when their national security is under attack.
A nation like the US cannot stay out of foreign politics; they must be a part of of the whole scheme..that's the price one pays for being a powerful nation...remember Rome?
If the US had remained quiet while terrorists blow their nation to bits, if the US didn't create a 'beach Head' in Iraq; only God knows what state the world would be in today.

I think the approach of attacking Afghanistan was the reason we failed in getting Osama. Musharaf of Pakistan was negotiating with Muhammed to get Osama. All Muhammed wanted, was the guarantee that Osama would go to a neutral country for prosecution.

Of course, because Bush has a small, accoutrement (for a better word) he had to go in with guns blazing, because Osama was OURS. Now, Osama is no one's, and the guns are still blazing.

If we had dealt with Afghanistan, we wouldn't have had to wage a war there, and Osama would be on trial.

Since Iraq was what Bush wanted regardless of the consequences, even without the terrorist attacks, he still would have found some lame excuse, like starving, tortured people, or the lie of soldiers throwing babies on the nursery room floors, like his father did just to protect his oil interests in Kuwait.

So forgetting about Iraq, it was never going to happen. Afghanistan, if someone smart had been in office, we could have avoided it altogether.

Well, most likely Saddam Insane would still be threatening his neighbors.
the U.N. would still be hounding him on violations, just like us;we get our accounts suspended and we build another bomb compound.
The liberals would be bashing Pres. Bush for not invading Iraq.
you know, the same old story, just different names.
God Bless

I think there were valid reasons to attack Afghanistan.

There were not valid reasons to attack Iraq. Attacking Iraq has severely damaged American credibility.
