I got a general discharge because of illegal drug use from the Air Force Reserves and am now considering the Army Reserves. I want to know if it is possible that I obtain a security clearance with the Army after my discharge with the Air Force?

One thing clear I do not use drugs and my following test after testing positive was negative I feel as though my unit wanted to get rid of me(just a side note) Thanks!

While they will look at that as a possible disqualifying factor, they look at the overall character of your service. They will also do at the very least a National Agency Check (NAC), or a Background Investigation (BI) or Special Background Investigation (SBI) to determine the type of security clearance your MOS requires.

If you only had the one offense, and you were otherwise in good standing during your tour of duty, I would expect you could get it.

If they go with the background investigations, they will naturally talk with those who have known you personally to see if your character is consistent with a security clearance, and one of the things they will look for is whether you have used or abused drugs since your discharge.

Well honestly you have to live with the choices you made bud. It matters on how long ago you did this and what kind of action was taken against you. I know people that have lost clearances for far less than a dirty piss test. Is your disciplinary action on your record? check your DD214. You might also want to ask a on-line army recruiter try goarmy.com. Good luck bro
There is also different levels of security clearances. Also something to think about you don't need a clearance for every job. again good luck

You will not get a Sierra Charlie ( Security Clearance) because of what you got discharged for. I doubt you got a General For Drugs, It is usually a Bad Conduct Discharge also Known as a Big Chicken Dinner. I was a Security Police Officer in the USAF and always heard that discharges from drugs , where always given BCD's

Yes, it is possible. there are people in the army with security clearances that have blemishes. It will take longer for your background check to be completed though. expect a polygraph if you are going for a higher clearance.

You need to figure out why you sabatoged your own career interest, and now still proceed to want this type work? Dont set yourself up for failure which is what you've been doing and looks like continuing. Like a man robbing banks, who now wants to be a bank manager? Nope doesnt work that way, most important you've got to find out why your continuing this destructive behavior. Maybe you could use your experience as a counselor for others?? you surely have the experience and the insiders knowledge of this.

If what you say is true, I would sue, and if I were your commander I would not recommend approval for your clearance.
