I have a guy friend in prison and I get to ask him a lot of those questions that you've always wanted to know about prison. One thing I asked about was communal underthings - do they get their very own or are they like sheets and they just get what they get when the laundry comes back. He said that when you get to jail you get your own stuff but it's only new to you.

Eeew!

So now I want to know if this is true for women's prisons too? Are the panties and things only new to you? And what are the bras like? Do they match? I assume they don't have underwires, but do they have any kind of support at all? Also, what about tampons? My friend said that he has to buy all of his own hygiene products (soap, toothpaste, etc) does that apply to tampons and such in the women's prison?

I know these are weird questions but I'm just curious if there are any women out there who have been to prison and can let me know? Thanks!

You're worried about matching wardrobe in a women's prison? About hygiene? You get whatever's available on the commissary list, period, and whatever you have the money for, assuming your family sends you any. And it will have a major mark-up. Phone minutes to call loved ones on your approved list? Try $90.00 for 300 minutes, and only 15 minutes at a time, and only after standing in line for hours to use the two working phones.

You will not be worried about what you're wearing. You will be worried about getting set up by your cellmate to do another ten years because she can get out sooner if she does so. You will be worried that you may have caught something after being forced to have oral sex with someone a LOT bigger than you. If you are pregnant, have asthma, diabetes, or other serious medical conditions, you need to be worried that you may die in there. Getting an inhaler to a prisoner isn't a major concern.

If you want cigarettes or a luxury item, like a sweater so you won't freeze to death during the winter, you can work it out with the male guards. Google search the Tallahassee FL newspapers regarding the FBI agent killed this past summer at the Tallahassee FCI. He was trying to arrest four or five of the male guards at the prison, who were extorting sex from the female prisoners in exchange for items they needed. (Guess they didn't have families to send them money for tampons).

One of the accused officers killed the FBI agent, with a weapon he never should have had at the prison. Before the smoke had even cleared, the local magistrate went on record to talk about what fine military records these men had, and let half of them walk on bond.

THIS is reality in women's prison. Showering in front of everyone else, using the toilet in front of everyone else, including the male officers, standing naked while you turn over your laundry for someone to do. Your wardrobe? Go to the November Coalition's web site, and see what those women have to deal with on a daily basis.
