It really just depends on you. I take Spanish, because I'm more likely to use that knowledge since I live in the South. Both are beautiful languages, and neither one is really any harder than the other.
They are both Romance languages, based on Latin, as are Portuguese, Italian and Romanian (?). Once you begin learning one, the others are easier to pick up. I know this from experience. One good thing about Spanish is that some of the words are the same as Portuguese and Italian, in case you ever decide to learn one of those languages.
As someone else said, French is the language of love. It is much more fluid, but also not quite as useful for an American.
Both languages have letters that are difficult to pronounce. Many people have trouble with the letters "rr" and "ll" in Spanish (the Spanish alphabet has 30 letters). In French, one of the 'r's is pronounced in the back of the throat.
Hope I helped!

If you live in most of the USA, probably Spanish would be your best bet. If you live way up north, or in Canada, then I'd suggest French. You would want to learn the language that will do you most good. I can see in the near future that the USA will need lots of Spanish interpreters due to the huge immigration of people from Central and South America. Even in offices where a college degree is not required, a Spanish-speaking person would always have a job.

I am Puerto Rican and I speak fluent spanish. I will have many more opportunities in finding a job than a non-spanish speaking person. My sister (who also speaks spanish) took some french classes. She said that it was easier than if she wouldn't have known spanish. She was the best in the class, and the only hispanic in the class. I will take some french classes since it would look great being a trilingual. Good Luck

I would learn Spanish, personally. If you live in the U.S., you're more likely to run into a spanish speaking person then a french speaking one. And then you could have secret conversations all your friends who took french would never know...Muahahaha... Unless you moved to France. Then french would probably be better to learn.
