The Sanhedrin was (it was disbanded after the razing of Jerusalem in 70 C.E.) the Highest Council (Court) in ancient Israel. The Sanhedrin was composed of judges, elders, priests, and scribes. It had the power to make decisions on the interpretations of the Torah, and was able to carry out executions for violations of the Torah, although this was rarely done, as meticulous amounts of evidence was needed to carry out an execution. When Rome began it's occupation of Judea, the Sanhedrin lost the power to carry out executions. This was re-iterated in the Gospels, when Christ's trial before prefect Pontius Pilate, the High Priest Joseph Caiaphas says, "It is not lawful for us to put a man to death." It is Jewish prophecy that the Sanhedrin will be re-established when the Messiah appears.
