The US Army Military Police are involved in all three missions of the Army. We are in combat, combat support, and combat service support. That means that we are mission capable in all three areas. The typical Military Police squad often has more firepower than the typical Infantry squad.

Until World War Two, the only time Military Police even existed (for the most part) was during wartime service. When the war was over, the Provost, Marchausee, or Military Police were disbanded. We became a permanent part of the Army in World War Two.

Since then, we have performed several missions, including direct combat, prisoner of war detention, discipline-law & order, site security, and corrections. We also do route reconnaisance and security. We are a force multiplier.

The MP is involved in it all. It just depends on your particular assignment, and whether you are assigned to a Corps, Brigade or Battalion level unit. Some units are still non-deployable. We train for it all, though.

my brother was an mp in the marines. and yes he was actually on the front lines and in the rear, it all depends on what they need you for. he took place in the fighting of najaf, he was in the holy cemetary fighting. i went to the navy recruiter about becoming an mp and he told me that the army and marine mp's are more of a combat force now. they train alot in urban warfare, there training is very similar to infantry training. the navy mp usually patrols bases or munitions bases or is the police force on a navy ship. from what my brother said it's pretty boring to do that in the navy. the airforce is probably the same way, just partoling bases and such. navy and air force mp's, as far as i've heard from recruiters, don't get deployed to warzones, you might go to kuwait though. i also want to be an mp it's just hard to decide if i want to be in the marines or the army. hope this helps. good luck in whatever you choose.

If we ever fought another army in linear war MPs would be the combat power in the rear. Fighting off bypassed units and enemy Special Forces units securing the lines of communication so the rest of the army can carry out their missions.

but in Iraq and most foreseeable conflicts in the next 20 years we will not be fighting a linear war so everyone is on the front line because their is no front line.
