One of the secrets of pushups is to use the muscles the exercise is designed to use: Your chest and shoulders and back and abs.
Keeping your abs super tight and your back in a straight line (keep your butt down, but your back straight, like a plank, no arching of the back!) will help you out. Keeping the abs tight will help you use more of your back muscles in the lowering of the body and when you push up, concentrate on using the chest muscles. You want your hands right below your shoulders. Sometimes changing your hand position will make pushups harder or easier, depending on the position.
Pushups are very very hard to do. If you're doing them right with proper form, you're not going to pull off too many. I've been doing these for years and can do 3 sets of 12 with good form. Check out your friends who're doing 50 of them... I'll bet you a nickle they were doing it with the wussy sway-back thing going on.

In a minute, I can do thirty to fourty. Eight is pretty bad. But you can also cheat by not going all the way down.
Anyways, don't feel bad. It is not like you are not going to college based on your pushups per minute. Hit the books and you will be fine.

Most people should be able to do at least 10 push ups without a rest. If you are not used to doing them at all, then practice makes perfect! I can do 15 - 20 without taking a break. I would suggest light weight training and resistance training to strengthen your muscles.

Work on your upper body strength a little more. Do bicep curls, skull crushers, chest presses, back rows, and side lateral raises. And don't forget your abs and lower back. This should help you to be able to do more push-ups.
