If your Labrador is in need of some charming company, try a Golden Labrador b1tch of the same age, gentlemen prefer blondes y`know.

Chosing a breed for a second dog is pretty much the same as chosing the breed for your first dog. Think about grooming, exercise requirements, amount of food, how good will children etc. However, when chosing a second dog you also need to take into account your existing dog's personality and the size of your home and the time you can dedicate to your pets.
Although another labrador or similar size dog will eventually match your lab in size and strength, large and small dogs do get along and play together and will not take up as much space as a second lab size dog.
I would not recommend another male unless you have the time to iron out potential problems. Most people would recommend neutering your male and getting a female.
An 18 month old lab is still immature and very lively so another young dog would be best suited. Can your household cope with this? Two dogs excite each other more than a single dog. Do you have the energy to train and care for both?
If your lab has a dominant personality then you may encounter problems if you bring another dominant dog into the house. Likewise, if your lab is shy around other dogs, an exuberant pup may be stressful.
I would advise sticking to a breed you are familiar with so that you can manage your mini pack most successfully.
Second dogs are great fun as you will really enjoy watching them play and communicate with eachother. You will learn a lot more about your existing dog too. Good luck and enjoy!

I have a female Labrador and she is perfect for our two 11 year old Boston Terriers for company. I would NOT get a another male dog because males and males sometimes do not get along.
A female Labrador,
For a small dog a Boston Terrier, or a Terrier.
But If i were you I'd go with a female lab.

Another Lab maybe or if you are looking for something smaller a Spaniel of some kind or why don't you go to your local shelter and take your pick there, you will be able to introduce your dog to any potentials and you will be given advice also, I keep GSD's but always have 1 or 2 rescue dogs also though I find it very hard going to shelters as I want to bring them all home!!!
Good luck in your search.

Dogs live so much more happily when they have another canine companion with them.I would advise a puppy, female. There is generally no problems in introducing a puppy to an excisting dog/pack. In this case I would also suggest either another lab or one from the gundog group. Good luck and have fun.

Friends of mine have a Chocolate Labrador, Springer Spaniel and mutt Chuihaha (sorry for the spelling!) and they all get on great! The Lab is the dominant one, so I think they rule with a rod of iron and make any dog get along with them!
I even like him, and I hate dogs!

probably another lab,but if you want something else make sure you keep it in the hunting breed like for example a beagle, bloodhound, coon hound,or a border collie.I have a black lab and a border collie and the play well with each other and me.Also look for a puppy around the same age.Older dogs tend to dominate you don't want that.

if your thinking of a second dog you need plenty of time on your hands! You need to think about the dog you already have is he obedient enough for you to handle another dog and also would you get a puppy,a dog the same age or one that's older? On deciding the best dog to get it depends what your dogs attitude is. is he really playful with other dogs or not?
