I think the best diet plans cut out food that is unhealthy, and encourage eating more fruits and vegetables. Trying a "fad" diet where you are required to drastically adhere to a certain meal plan can be hard to stick to, and often they aren't healthy. I think it's best to be simple - cut out foods with refined or processed ingredients (like a partially hydrogenated oils) and cut down on saturated fats. The healthiest peoples on the planet usually have most of their diet consist of whole grains, fruits and vegetables, fish, nuts and seeds, and no junk food or processed foods. Take a look at mediterranean cusine; it's healthy, but tastes good as well.

The key is not to focus on losing weight, but focus on eating healthy, and all nutritionists will agree on this. Adding an appropriate amount of exercise for your ability and time is imperative as well.

EDIT: If you must stick to a meal plan, though, I have found "The Gold Coast Cure" to be the most reasonable. They don't make any wacky claims or advocate unhealthy eating like some diets (*cough* Atkins! *cough*) do, and most of their recommendations have been proven over time and through various studies.

You might think about trying The Movie Star Diet. I lost 50 pounds with it after only five months, and I couldn't be happier. I've tried a lot of different diets (Atkins, South Beach, and Weight Watchers, etc.) and none of them worked anywhere near as well as this one. It's definitely worth a shot if you really want to see a difference in a short time.
