Did they depict real history or did Hollywood go berserk?

It seems as if you answered your own question. The original stories are close to what history claims really happened. There in lies the trouble; many events about the war were set in motion by their "spin doctors". The people of their time said as much then, after the war and up to their death beds. For example, Little Round Top, Chamberlain's was placed there because he was a terrible officer his famous charge was a mistake. Does that take away from his bravery absolutely not? Were we looking for shoes, no everyone but the producer admitted that for the last hundred years? Historians in the last 6 years have figured out we did not have 15,000 men at Pickett’s’ charge (they now claim it was a bit over 10,000) so what? What if it were one? Would he be any less brave? That was exactly why things were changed them and by their widows, it better fit the script (by the way, they do it today and will tomorrow).

Chamberlain and Gordon did not salute each other at Appomattox. As anyone who has been in the service knows after a few minutes, one has to shift positions and that was what Chamberlain was doing. In real life, they had to take the ammunition from both sides or they would have continued fighting. I hope this answers your question(s). Thanks for the opportunity to answer them. God Bless You and the Southern People.

Note: Did I mention I starred in them, Glory and one or two others? Yep, just look for me in a grey uniform.

I liked the book: The Killer Angels but have only seen Gettysburg. Maybe I should see the other one. May rent it .

Hollywood at its worst! Neither movie were that true to historical face but did make you think what happened back then.
