yours is not a question it is a struggle on who is right or wrong. there is no such thing. let me enumerate a few factors..since i have been there
a. an old house is an interesting proposition.
b. provided you/husband and you have the skills to renovate...that includes lots of patience etc.
c. to build from scratch is also a nice idea -- go back and answer b again --
d. it all a question of finance and economics -- do your math.
last but not least you are both losing so much energy in arguing about the options. the important thing is to decide. then you will see how to take struggle through....--if nothing works sell -- with a loss and you have learned a lesson but you are no longer in square one. hope it helps.

This isn't worth fighting about. I suspect that you are competitive with each other and both of you just want to win the argument. It won't take long to lose your marriage that way.

BTW, buy whatever you want and make the seller provide a warranty policiy like those from American Home Shield or the like. Then you're protected.
