i was speaking with a woman whose husband works for the MTA and he says that if you don't pay, they can't kick you off. i was wondering if any other new yorkers had heard this.

she says as long as you're not being disruptive, or making a scene, they have no grounds to ask you to leave.

say, i lost my wallet or something. i mean, the trains already moving when they check your tickets.

lemme know if anyone has any experience with this.

ok. not the subway. my mistake, i meant the railway. like the long island railroad, for example. THEY have tickets. that's what i meant. obviously you can't jump the turnstile.

They don't "check" your tickets. As in most modern systems you have to pass tickets thru an electronic reader to open a gate or turnstile. People get arrested all the time for leaping over the turnstiles & the subway system is loaded with police officers. You may get away with it in some of the outlying stations in off hours, or you may get a head start on building your criminal record.

That's completely false. This is the NYC Subway correct?

One, they don't have tickets. You have to buy a metrocard to swipe thru the turnstile, which is a big steel gate. Jumping a turnstile is a misdemeanor in New York and you can be arrested for it.

She was right in that IF YOU ARE A PAYING PASSENGER and aren't being disruptive, etc, they have no grounds to kick you off. But if you haven't paid, you can't gain entry to the system. And if you jump the turnstile, good luck to you.

And as for personal experience? I was in 42nd/Grand Central on the #4/5/6 line buying a metrocard from the machine when I saw a guy jump the turnstile. Genius did it in full view of three NYPD Officers and hundreds of witnesses. Cops collared the guy and got another idiot off the subway.

I've seen people show up without cash or a ticket on the LIRR. They ask for ID and make you fill out some form which is basically an IOU form/envelope to the MTA. They get a copy, you get the carbon copy with the envelope. If you don't have ID, I doubt you'd get kicked off, so I guess you could in theory fill out the form with bogus information, but I don't think this is a sustainable way to ride the railroad.

You cannot ride New York City Subway and buses for free. It will be $100 fine will be charged by NYCT Police, NYPD and MTA Fare Inspectors (for Select Bus Service). If you're Student, school give out Student MetroCard. It is illegal to jump over turnstile or use bended MetroCard.

if you get on without a ticket... they make you pay with cash on the spot on the train, with a surcharge.
If you dont have cash, they radio ahead and have the cops waiting for you at the next station.
I have seen it happen on Metro North and NJ Transit.

I'm sure they have every right to kick you off if you can't pay. I don't know that they will but they can. It's probably at the discretion of the conductor collecting your ticket.
