My house has 40-year old original wood trim around all the doorways and windows. Some of this trim has been painted; the rest is all beat-up looking.

Can the painted trim be stripped and refinished? Without taking it off of the walls?

Can the beat-up wood be made to look like new again? Again, without taking it off of the walls?

There is nothing more beautiful than well maintained natural wood trim. You can strip it on the wall, which I would recommend, since you could damage it when trying to remove it. Removal would also require re-nailing and filling all the holes. Any stain or mess you get on the walls can be sealed and painted over. Not to worry.

Damage in the form of nicks and even some water stains can be sanded out. Some of our sashes were almost black and came out perfect.

We live in a 100 year old house and have stripped most of the woodwork, which included over 20 windows and tall wall moldings. I used a good gel stripper and a hand sander. In areas where it didn't look bad I simply roughed it up with fine sandpaper (removed the shine from the old varnish) and stained right over in a matching color. Then we applied three coats of a good poly-urethane over everything.

Do take one small piece of wood to a good local paint store - not one of the big box stores - and have them custom match the stain for you or you could choose a new color. If it's a good store they'll also walk you through the process step by step. We had never done anything like this and aren't do it your-selfers so were very grateful to get good advice.

It's a lot of work but well worth it when it's done!

Home Depot has paint remover that's very thick like glue and it's clear. Just apply it with a small brush. Tape up the area you don't want stripped. Scrape, let dry, prime and paint.

Do what I did take a small piece off and take it to a hardware store and buy a stain stick. They will know what it is and just touch up to bad parts. Its really easy and you can do it on the walls
