try cutting a shoe shape out of card board and cutting holes in it for laces. buy long laces and lace into the card board. this way he can practice over and over with out having to take his shoes off. you can make a few of these and keep one in each car or in several rooms in the house. it's working for my son. something you might try with the laces in the card board is 2 different colors. tie 2 colors together and tape that knot behind the card board then lace through. this way he can see which lace goes where.

I don't know of a rhyme. But sit the child on your lap and show him the bunny ear style. Repetition is the only way. Take his hands and go through the tying steps with him. Just a hint though, don't teach him facing him because like me, a right handed person, will learn to tie left handed. I can't tie right handed if I wanted to.

I taught my son to tie his shoe by tying shoes together ( monkey see monkey do ). He took one of his shoes and I took the other and we practiced tying them like this everytime his shoes came untied. I found it easier to start with the "two bunny ears" as oposed to the way most adults tie them with the one loop and swoop. You have to find a way that will suit your kid. What worked for mine might not work for yours. If he likes to sing then teach him a little song to sing as he ties his laces. It doesn't have to make sense, just as long as he likes it! After my son learned to tie his laces he tied anything he could together. He used to walk around with a train of shoes that were all tied together, and that's when I started teaching him how to untie knots!!

I think that was meant to be ... tie their shoes ! I thought mine to make two bunny ears first and then to cross and tie them. It takes time and repetition, depending on their age, they soon learn. And it is fun doing it over again. I wish the grown ups would learn that fast!!!

My kid has never been interested in teaching his shoes. However, we did use the bunny story to teach him to tie his shoes. I think it goes like this...
Make 2 bunny ears, one goes around the tree and into the burrow, pull tight.

It's like the answer to that old joke "How do I get to Carnegie Hall?"..."Practice!"...
You could use the "bunny ears" technique (how I learned) or the "loop-swoop & pull" (a bit more complicated). Either way, praise them when they succeed and let them know there's plenty of time when they DON'T succeed.
