About 20 years ago, on a long trip. About 3 hours into the trip my tire blew out, I pulled over and he changed for me.Thank God for those angels he puts in our path.I don't know what I would have done, we were in a truck and the screws were really hard to get off.I did buy him breakfast and give him 20 bucks.Very nice guy.

2 weeks ago a young man had a flat tire in front of my grandmother's house and was going door to door to see if someone would let him use their phone. I pulled up to my grandmother's about the time he was walking back to his truck. I allowed him to use my cell phone to try home, but he couldn't reach anyone. He was very polite and told us it was his first day at a new job. He called work and told his new boss of his dilemma. I could tell the boss was not very understanding, and I'm sure he's heard the story before from other employees. Something told me "take the guy to work". So, I did. I felt comfortable doing so. Had I felt the least bit weird about it I would have left it at allowing him to call his employer. I've seen my own husband down on his luck and would hope somebody would extend him the same kindness. The only other hitchhiker I have ever picked up was a guy I graduated with from high school. It was raining and I recognized him. He was reluctant to get in my car soaking wet, but I insisted. I wouldn't recommend people picking up just anyone. There was a time that it was okay and safe to do that. Things are different now - A LOT DIFFERENT.

A long time ago when I was an Officer, I found a car on US HWY 27 with two dead young ladies. One had obviously been raped. The last know person saw them pick up a hitchhiker, and the detectives never found him. Yes...they really exist. I realize that most are probably okay, but why play Russian Roulette?
No....absolutely not. I do not pick-up hitchhikers.

I have on a few occassions.
Several times I have given rides to a woman in town who is mentally ill but harmless, she hitchhikes everywhere she goes. It's really even kind of funny to call her a hitchhiker, as everyone in town knows her and her little quirks. She goes to restaurants in the downtown area and asks for odd foods (like pickle tacos) and they usually serve her free of charge with whatever she asks for, then she looks for rides to and from home.
I've also driven a local attorney to a Saturday children's basketball game at a church when his truck broke down, and drove a young girl to her family's house when she found it was a further walk into town than she thought. She seemed just as scared to ask for a ride as most people are to give rides - she had several people flat-out offer and turned them down, then when they drove up she walked up and politely asked me.
I would do it again, under the proper circumstances. It's an easy enough way to help someone out.

Frankly, it's just not as safe as it used to be either. I wish that I could pick up people in need of a lift but it's just not a good idea for personal safety reasons. Plus, I'm a girl.
The last time I picked up hitchhikers it was 1990. I picked up two guys on my way up to Santa Fe Ski Area -- it was blizzarding, they were freezing at the Hitching Post and I needed the company to brave the road up to the ski area.

I did a few years ago, but she really wasn't hitchhiking. She was walking with a young child (2-3 years old). I asked if she wanted a ride, I could see she was tired. I'm glad I did, she needed to go about 8 miles and that was much too far for her and that child to walk. The person who was supposed to give her a ride never showed up.

In Florida there was a woman men felt they might get lucky with, and found themselfs dead. Also have you stopped for someone and two others came running up? I did at one time pick up hitchhikers, but many today feel as I that they might harm you.

Today!!! Don't ask me what I was thinking. They were visiting from out of the country and got lost, and asked for a ride. So I tried to show them some Southern hospitality and drove 3 of them to their destination. After I thought about what I had just done I went home and kissed the kitchen floor. I realized how stupid I was. Where was my brain today!?
This is not the 70's or even the 80's, it just is not safe. If you want to live a good long life be smarter, let them walk and remind yourself, it's good for their heart.

Because many people fear for their personal safety!!!!!!!!! I would rather walk 20 miles than hitchhike. Most Americans are overweight, so it would do them good to get the exercise. I also would never pick someone up. How do you know if they are a killer?

Two days ago. I pick them up whenever I've got room. Mind you, there's much less violent crime here than in the States. I've been hitch hiking and giving rides for 40 years in about 20 countries, including the States, and I've never had any trouble.
