George Washington is always a good choice. But, Jefferson, Polk, Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, FDR, Reagan, among others had very very important roles in determining the outcome of the great experiment. And, whether you like them or not, Nixon, Carter, and Bush will be seen at great turning points in history.

Whew - Judging from the answers above - What a Great question!!! Clinton & Bush's as Great??? Sorry, did you read the question? Have you read your history books? Can you read?
Great people are only discovered in time. Recent presidents can hardly be judged as Great! Especially when they use the office for their own benefit.
The greats were those who helped move this country forward ... Lincoln, Washington, Roosevelt, Kennedy! Some of your answers are without merit!
Granted, we Sasquatch's are far from perfect! But You need to study your history a bit more.
I appologize if I have offended anyone, but please look at what some of these people have (or have not) accomplished.
There have been a great many wonderful presidents and choosing the best may be hard. But please do not choose someone who has caused this great country dishonor.
IMHO,

Clinton had the best economy for the working class. Clinton also had 8 years of relative peace. The Iraq war will cost working class tax payers $2 trillion over 10 years. We have a $9 trillion national debt under Republicans. We also have close to 2800 dead brave Americans in Iraq and over 30,000 wounded. Republicans have added 600,000 vets of war, 1/3 are sick. I give Washington credit at least he was not a draft dodger like Bush and Cheney.
BTW, we are not safer now then before Sept.11th. with the mess in Darfar, China, N. Korea and Iran and Clinton was not in office when that big mess was made. It is also true that Republicans want more illegals not less, they love the cheap labor.

I'm going to say Abraham Lincoln -- he was practically a mutant, for starters! I mean, back then people were a near full foot shorter than they are today. He was well over 6'! No wonder they voted for him. He freed the slaves, which I totally admire, and I don't think this country would be worth bragging over if he hadn't done that -- not to mention, he wrote the most beautiful speeches. Also noteworthy is he never wore one of those stupid powdered wigs.
On the Washington bit though, I did read something so awesomely funny about him: he had OCD so bad that he stood with his hands behind his back, and tried to make cortseying to the president standard ettiquette instead of a handshake.

If the criteria were base on the hardest decision I would pick Harry Truman. 17% approval rating and he still dropped the bomb instead of loosing 100 thousand Americans in a land invasion of Japan.
Based on who accomplished the most is a matter of opinion.

Thomas Jefferson - aside from his focus on making/keeping the U.S. an agrarian society, the man had his head screwed on straight. Like Franklin, he was definitely one of America's "Renaissance men" who shaped the way the country would be for years thereafter.

Lincoln. Whether he approved of slavery or not, he is responsible for legislating the single greatest act of tolerance and compassion our nation has ever known, regardless of its immediate popularity. If only all our presidents valued civility!
