When you figure it out, please share! I had the same experience this summer, although I was seated first due to traveling with my son. As the "overly over-sized" person (very tactful, by the way!) approached, all I could think was "Please, don't sit here!"
As soon as the lady sat down, she occupied not only her space but half of mine as well. In this case, the arm rest didn't help, as she kind of "spilled" over it and around it. My son, who was 7 months old at the time, didn't know what to think, as this was the largest human he had ever seen. He finally reached over and patted her "ample" stomach and thighs. I was horrified, but thankfully she liked babies. . .she was wearing a bright pink shirt, so I said something about "He really likes bright colors!"
I, too, feel that I have the right to occupy my own seat, ALONE. Unless the "overly over-sized" people would like to pay for their part of my seat, I want what I pay for!

He was probably the one to put the arm rest up before you got there, and he would have probably refused to put it down even if you asked him. Better you just sucked it up instead of making things even more uncomfortable by getting into an argument with the guy. To avoid this in the future, probably best to get on the plane early next time, and then someone else would have to be the one to ask you if they can lift the arm rest. You can then refuse if you want, and if that other passenger calls for the flight attendant because you are not cooperating, maybe you or him will get moved to a different seat, or better yet, upgraded.

I would have just put the arm rest down. I feel sorry for anyone that allows them-self to become so large or even if there is a medical reason, if they are that large then they need to buy tickets to use 2 seats. You paid for a flight that you were not able to enjoy.

If the flight is not full, ask a flight attendant (out of earshot of the passenger) if it would be ok for you to move to another seat.
I'm not sure anything can be done when the flight is full, stopping short of asking the other passenger to put the arm rest down.

I am an over size person. I would never dream of doing this to some one else. I really feel sorry that you had to endure that. Me personally I like mt personal space and can't sit like that with any one. Next time ask them politely to lower there arm rest.

it quite is not inevitably a larger area what it actual is, is that there is quite not absolutely everyone in front of you so it quite is going to look larger. The seat is the comparable length as all of the different ones. while you're finding for greater leg room attempt for an go out row they commonly have plenty greater room yet could have narrower seats

I would just put the armrest down. But, I would like to add that people are bigger than they used to be and airline seats seem smaller than they used to be. I think that in airline companies push to get more people on the plane they make seats smaller and more uncomfortable.

well i think its rude for the person to take up your space, and have the armrest up. if a person is overly over sized the should purchase 2 seats. thats what happens here in aussie

You had every right to put the arm rest down. That person should have had to buy 2 seats if his fat @ss couldn't fit into one. You were being very kind. But unfortunately, at your own inconvenience.

Yes, I would ask to switch seats.
You have a right to have your own seat to yourself, not sharing someone elses extra skin.
