I know you said that you don't want a web site, but this one really is free and you can download a free copy of Personal Ancestry File (PAF). This is a great family tree tool. www.familysearch.org

I started mine by asking lots of questions to all family members writing down dates, places, marriages, births, deaths etc. Jobs are good to search for if they did something different. One of mine worked for a prison and a railway so i could trace both of these. From this information start your research and follow as many avenues as possible, joining things does cost and it isn't a cheap task. I went to get copy birth certificates and they cost from 6 to 12pounds each so research via the Internet. Don't loose heart it takes time and can be really frustrating. Lastly look for family history tours or events at the Library can get some good advice for free and they may have some good suggestions on where to go next.
Best of luck with it.

Let's see...maybe it won't work because there aren't enough branches...

Teasin...

Actually ibraries are getting better at making ancestry records available for such a purpose... If the family is from another area...contcat a library in that area... if they are from overseas you'll have an uphill battle....

Overseas you can contcat the governmental agency that records births and ask for as much information as possibe. Try to get a phone book to the city nearest to where your relatives came from and write to everyone with the same last name...

Well all i can say is that I don't know what you are referring to but i am in the process of doing the same thing. I was told to look in Microsoft Office Word and type in Family Tree. See if you like that.
