You mean side DISH (until I read the other Answerers I thought you were asking which side of a piece of chicken should be on the skillet or which side should be placed onto the marsala sauce).
Anyway, in most Italian restaurants around the world its pasta with red sauce, served in/on a separate bowl or dish. Perhaps also with a veggie like hot broccoli or rabe or spinach or kale in a bit of garlicky oil.

Mmmmm, Arugula salad with goat cheese. Take about two cups of washed, dry Arugula. Arugula is a green which looks like spinach but has a delicious peppery taste. Cut up a couple of seeded Roma tomatoes. slice and dice the tomatoes and toss in the salad. Add some crumbled goat cheese and dress with a simple balsamic and extra virgin olive oil vinaigrette and BAM. I getting hungry just thinking about it. LOL
