My 22 month old fiest mix is at the vet now for xrays -- she was hit by a car and at the least has a broken back leg. I dropped her off at 8 this morning and haven't heard anything yet. Anyone who has had a similar experience -- is this normal, or should I start getting worried that they have found something other than the broken leg? I guess I'm being paranoid -- I had to put her brother down a month ago for a rare viral infection, and she is the last of her litter that I have.

Anyone with past experience with dogs with broken legs -- what do I have to look forward to? What kind of special care will she need?

All serious answers are greatly appreciated.

Got the call back -- she needs a pin put in her leg, and has over a dozen pelvic fractures that will heal on their own. Price for the surgery - between $430 and $550.

I wouldn't worry about the leg at all. Fractures can be fixed. Vets usually try to focus on the chest are first, to see whether or not there is fluid in/around the lungs, making sure that the animal isn't in shock, etc. This could be why it's taking such a long while.
Dogs are usually really strong animals, and can get through a lot. They usually have a cast put on them for at least a month (depending on the fracture), but they feel comfortable (with the support of the cast )walking on the leg right away (it's really amazing, but I've seen it a lot). Some dogs might need surgery for their fractures, so that can be more time consuming, and some legs may be so badly mangled that they need to be amputated. I wouldn't worry... just do what the vet tells you to do. Don't worry, your dog will be fine.

your dog will be ok . if the vet have not called you yet dont worry they will call you before they close up . when you took your dog in to the vet they will take it in the back and lock her up in a cage by her self untill they are ready for it . you got to be careful with your dog and you need to put a fence up were the dog is safe . when you get her back from the vet she will need alot alot of care . you well need her to stay in the house . if she needs to go the bathroom take her on a leash and walk with her . then bring her back in . when you pick her up ask the vet for some metacam it will help your dog . hope it all works out .

Call and put your mind to rest! The vet is a professional that is busy but the doctor and his staff are a service based business and you are the heart of their business. Just be polite and ask for a quick update, most know how worried you are and will comply.

I would call the vets office 30 minutes b/f they close & see what they have done. It takes awhile to xray & reset legs/hips.

Your dog was hit by a car, Chances are (god forbid) there are also internal injuries. I have a dog, and I feel for you, I just had to put my oldest dog down in June.
