Well, you have to get there for one thing. And there are such things as designated drivers who don't drink when going out with one or more people so they can drive people home. Also, in the US (we call them parking lots not car parks), you can have one ounce of liquor an hour or the equivalent in wine or beer and not get drunk as the liver can break down one ounce of alcohol an hour (that is one drink an hour, not three drinks all at once at the end of three hours for example or you can have three drinks at once then no more for the rest of the three hours, for example) Sorry, I can't recall the proof, but I think 60-70. It also depends on how much you weigh, whether you eat or not, what meds you might be taking and how well your liver breaks down the alcohol. A designated driver is best followed by calling a cab or someone to come and get you followed by a self testing breathalyzer. It is not as accurate as the one the police use or a blood alcohol, but it will give you a ballpark reading as to whether you are legally drunk.

The car parks are where sensible people to put their cars who will not drink on their visit to the pub.
It is not compulsory for you to drink alcohol when in a pub!
You have a choice. That's why they put car parks there, why don't you take a bicycle?

Good question - they'd probably say that they are gastropubs and the food comes second to the booze - but that's a recent thing - i am sure that older pub car parks were built in the days when the harm of drinking and driving wasn't understood

So the responsible minded person can park the car, while family or friends can drink and get home safely with the person who is not drinking alcohol.Quite simple.Mind you it doesnt stop some idiots from dinking and driveing or useing mobiles while driveing.

two words - designated drivers. Some places would lose up to 60% of thier business if they didn't offer parking for those who have drivers or do not drink. As far as people not being responsible enough to not drink and drive, that's an issue for the patron to address.

For the Staff!
You think we sleep under the tables,or something?
more seriously..Until there's a blood alcohol level of Zero set in law, people are going to take a car to the pub (or a designated driver..)

What if you only have water or soda because you are the designated driver?? Where would you park. Or if you work there? Just because you go to a bar doesn't mean you are going to drink.

Parking lots are for the designated driver and for all the other ones who will get their car back tomorrow morning since they took a cab.

Because drinking and then driving is different from drinking while driving in that one is illegal and the other is not.

It is not illegal to drink and drive. It is illegal to drink until impaired, and then drive. The definition of impairment depends on where you are; in the US, a common limit is 0.08% blood alcohol.
